why bong county?

Our company is located approximately 15 miles from Gbarnga, the Bong County seat, on an unpaved road. Gbarnga, a major regional trade center, is 125 miles from Monrovia over a major paved highway. Traveling away from Monrovia, Gbarnga is 68 miles form Nzerekole, a major town in Guinea; and 120 miles and 135 miles from the Ivoiran towns of Dansane and Man. Sierra Leone is also reachable via a one-day drive. Bong County therefore provides access by road to the capital plus major towns in three neighboring countries which will be useful as we develop our cocoa farm.
Within Bong County, we have already identified additional opportunities for expansion. A large percentage of Bong County land is arable and undeveloped.
We have designated a footprint of 25 miles from our land as our social corporate responsibility focus area, consisting of smallholder farms and villages surviving in extreme poverty. There is one small nearby town and very few schools or functioning health clinics. Except for Gbargna, residents have no access to electricity or, for the most part, to clean drinking water. As the future major employer in the area, we will dramatically improve livelihoods both through direct labor of women and men, indirect labor through local sourcing and support for local small businesses and with our corporate social outreach programs.
